Chan Finished?

I finished up Chan’s full figure this weekend. This is the first time I ever made a full human figure in any 3D program. Here are some quick renders.

Things I learned:

  • Modeling hands is a b*tch.
  • Modeling folds is fun!
  • Using SketchUp isn’t the best tool for making human shapes.
  • Using SketchUp to make human shapes is fun – and zen-like.
  • I wouldn’t have it any other way.
  • I don’t know of any other way.

Chan in 3D!

Jimmy Chan head made in SketchUp!

I took front and side pictures of the sculpture (see post here) and imported them into SketchUp. Using the draw tool I built out the left side of the head, then flipped it. My preference in 3D characters is that they look and feel asymmetrical – much like real-life faces. To that end, I contorted and bent the features until I got something that looked dramatic and had character. I bent up the hat, as well, but it became too floppy looking. I kept the bent up bill, and used a more stiff looking hat. I like the contrast it creates with the distortions in the head.

I’m not sure about the front view of the head; the silhouette appears simplistic, but I think the side view turned out really well.
